New Egg!

We have a new egg! Technically we get new eggs every day from our chickens but today, we have a new layer.

Background: April 2nd we got 10 baby chicks to add to our flock. Two didn't make it so we were left with one Andalusian, one Easter Egger, 3 Welsummers and 3 Marans (from a heritage mix - we believe we have one White, one Golden and one Black Laced). August 18th we got our first Maran egg from the Black Laced girl but none of our other chicks were laying yet. Until today...

Here is a picture of our new addition (it is pretty big for a first egg!)
Last year we had one bantam rooster (Mr. CluckCluck) and 7 laying baby chicks. In the fall we lost Mr. CluckCluck and one Leghorn to a hawk and in January one of the remaining leghorns laid an egg then curled up in the coop and died. Possible heart break? She was never the same after she lost her one friend and Mr. CluckCluck. So this year we started with 5 laying hens and added 10 chicks.

We now have 5 older laying hens, 2 new laying hens and 6 more that will hopefully get with the program soon. Obviously we eat a lot of eggs around here.
